Sligo Scores High in 2013 IBAL Anti Litter Survey

Sligo scores high in 2013 IBAL Anti Litter SurveySligo is now the 13th cleanest town in Ireland. A total of 42 towns and cities around the Country were surveyed. 10 sites in Sligo got a special mention for being well maintained and litter free. The Mayor of Sligo Councillor Marcella McGarry welcomed the news and said this was a huge boost for Sligo. She continued by saying that credit goes to the voluntary groups and agencies who worked together to achieve a common goal. She paid particular tribute to Sligo Tidy Towns, Sligo Leader – TUS Employees, Sligo Businesses and the staff of Sligo Borough Council and Sligo Chamber for their work in improving Sligo’s ranking in the Anti Litter Survey.

It was an excellent result for Sligo – even better than IBAL Survey 1, 2013. All sites got the top litter grade and within this category some of the sites deserve a special mention. Pedestrian Bridge and Prom is a lovely amenity which was in excellent condition. Recycle Facility at Car Park of Model Arts Centre was clean and freshly presented and Sligo Train Station was nicely presented and maintained.

N4 Approach Grade A.  (from roundabout at Summerhill to junction at Lord Edward Street). This was a very clean and tidy approach to Sligo with all planted areas, paving, walls and railings in very good condition. This very high standard was sustained for all of the sites surveyed in Sligo.

Sligo Train Station: Grade A. The train station is very nicely presented and maintained. The car park surface / markings / signage were in good order and the whole impression created here was very positive.

Dunnes Stores Car Park: Grade A. There was a virtual absence of litter at this functional car park.

O’Connell Street: Grade A. A clean and tidy shopping street with a virtual absence of litter.

Recycle Facility at Car Park of Model Arts Centre: Grade A. (off Connaughton Road) This was a clean and freshly presented recycle facility – the recycle containers were not grubby (as so frequently occurs at recycle facilities). Overall, this was a well maintained environment.

Cinema at Model Centre: Grade A. The area surveyed was to the rear of the Model Arts Centre and just the cinema and immediate environs were included. This facility was very nicely presented and maintained – all aspects of the area surveyed were in very good order.

Pedestrian Bridge and Prom: Grade A. A lovely amenity which was in excellent condition – the railings, street lamps, seating, bins, pathway etc. were all very well maintained and there was a complete absence of litter throughout.

Connaughton Road: Grade A. A very clean and well maintained road with surface / signage / markings in good order and some attractive landscaping. There was extensive hoarding which had been colourfully decorated with attractive murals.

Recycle Facility beside Ray McSharry Park: Grade A. A small recycle facility along the roadside – there was a virtual absence of litter and it was generally well maintained.

R287: Grade A. (from lights at Markievicz Park to roundabout at Sligo Retail Park) An excellent route – the road was not just clear of all litter but it was very fresh and clean in appearance – a top ranking site throughout.
